Nationalism meets racism in a divided Cyprus: How fences and walls cement authoritarianism on the island

by Maria Avraamidou

Nationalism meets racism in a divided Cyprus How fences and walls cement authoritarianism on the island

This freshly published opinion piece by Maria Avraamidou, entitled "Nationalism meets racism in a divided Cyprus", discusses the decision of the Cyprus government to implement a fence wire across the Green Line to "keep migrants out".

Maria offers a critique to the mutual reinforcement of nationalism and racism in governmental discourse and policies in the Greek-Cypriot community, before and after the fence, arguing that the fence serves its authoritarian agenda, blocking the potential for reconciliation with the Turkish-Cypriot community and, by extent, the deepening of democracy.
